My Baby Left Me, But That's Alright, (Mama)

UK, 14th October, 1977
Barn Records - 2014 114

Following the untimely death of Elvis Presley on 16th August, 1977, Slade recorded and released this Medley of two of his early hits, as their tribute to "The King of Rock 'n' Roll"!

UK / German Picture  Cover of "My Baby Left Me, But That's Alright, (Mama)".
After the disappointment of their last single's not charting, it was good to see the band back in the UK Singles Charts again, where it reached Number 32, and remained in the charts for four weeks.

Critical receptionEdit

Upon release, Record Mirror said: "A Slade slug at a Crudup past. Real pleasant it is too. But I can remember a time when Slade records were vixen fearsome rather than pleasant. Fearsome on their own songs, not some cruising rocker from way back. Get out while the going's bad. 'Cos it's only going to get hideous."[10] Sounds rated the single as the "Best Comeback Single", writing: "Fabulous treatment of this old Arthur Crudup number could easily see Slade back in the charts. It's a bouncy, struttin' 12-bar blues number quite unlike most of the band's earlier hit singles and it could just be the right thing to get them back into favour at the current time. On the other hand it could be that its remarkable similarity to the treatments of old blues numbers by a certain Johnny Winter Esq is clouding my judgement. We'll have to wait and see."

 France - Barn - 1977.

 Australia - Polydor - March, 1978.

Germany, 1977 - Double LP
Barn 2689 001 / 2365 104 / 2365 105
Also, in 1977, Barn released a Double Compilation Album, "The Story Of.....SLADE...", but it was only released in Germany, although imported copies were fairly easily available.

The Album only included songs from the band"s pre - Barn "Polydor" label years though.  It would be 1980 and "Slade Smashes" before we got a compilation, featuring tracks from both labels!

My thanks to Chris 'The Historian' Selby for his relentless research. It is said, in certain circles, that Walsall Archives have a seat reserved specifically for him and that Wolverhampton archives consult him when searching the Express & Star

( Arthur Crudup / Arthur Crudup )

Well my baby left me and never said a word
Was it something I done, something that she heard
You know she left me, My baby left me
You know she even left me, Never said a word

Well I stand by my window, wring my hands and moan
You know the one I love, the one I love is gone
You know she left me - my baby left me
You know she even left me - Never said a word

Well that's alright my mama - That's alright by me
That's alright my mama - Any old way you choose
Oh that's alright (That's alright) - Ooh that's  alright (That's alright)
Well that's alright my mama - Any old way you choose

Take it grasshopper

You know that one and one is two - Two and two is four
Ooh you know my little baby, she don't come round no more
My baby left me (That's alright) - You know she left me (That's alright)
My baby even left me - Never said a word (That's alright), (That's  alright)

You know my baby left me - Never said a word (That's alright), (That's alright)
You know my baby left me - Never said a word

She's gone - solid gone

Oi

Mr Tax, Mr Tax, Mr Tax
You've got pounds, we've got pence
Why don't you come to your senses?
Mr Tax, Mr Tax, Mr Tax

You're bleeding me dry
(What you want now what you take now and more)
You take, take, take it - rock and roll's your money maker
(What you need now is what you get now and more)
I make it all, you take it all, you got it

I'm scrapping the flat, 'cos I'm working in that
Mr Tax, Mr Tax, Mr Tax
If I pay all my dues with these holes in my shoes
Just relax off my back Mr Tax

You're bleeding me dry
What you want now is what you take now and more
I make it, you take it - rock and roll's your money maker
What you need now is what you get now and more
I make it all, you take it all, you got it

Hey man what's your game?
Hey man what's your name?

Hey man what's your name?

Mr Inspector...with your miles and miles of sad exiles
Mr Collector...with your miles and miles of money files

With your note on the dole queue
It's the best thing for us, to get some back off our tax, Mr Tax
Still you drive up for incomes to break in a few
What's the crack let 'em back Mr Tax

You're bleeding me dry now
What you want now what you take now and more
You're taking rolls of money makers
What you need now is what you get now and more
I make some more, you take it all, you get it all, you still want more

You're bleeding me dry it's hard to see why
Will you settle for less Mr O.H.M.S.
You bleed me dry with no reason why
I make some more you still want more you get it

Hey man what's your game?
Hey man what's your name?
